Il saggio muove da una definizione preliminare del termine éschaton e ne traccia il decorso. Mostra come nella tradizione di Israele la teologia dell’éschaton si configuri come una «teologia del regno» divenendo così una categoria politica, più specificamente messianica; e come quest’ultima si prolunghi nel cristianesimo, in una teologia della storia in cui il differimento della fine si è accompagnato al consolidarsi di istituzioni sostitutive. Secolarizzata nelle forme del progresso e della rivoluzione e poi compromessa dalle ideologie totalitarie, la speranza in un tempo radicalmente nuovo sembra aver perso rilevanza. Eppure il congedo dalle escatologie iperpolitiche non esime la politica dal farsi governo delle contingenze nella società del rischio guardando, qui ed ora, alla comune umanità delle «generazioni di Adamo». E almeno in questa luce volgersi ancora all’avvenire sotto il segno della redenzione.

The essay moves from a preliminary definition of the term éschaton and traces its development. It shows how in the Israelitic tradition the theology of éschaton formulated itself as a «theology of the kingdom», thus becoming a political category, more specifically a messianic one; and how it penetrated Christianity, giving rise to a theology of history in which the deferment of the end was accompanied by the consolidation of substitutive institutions. Secularized in the forms of progress and revolution and then compromised by totalitarian ideologies, the hope in a radically new time seems to have lost relevance. Yet the end of hyper-political escatologies does not exempt politics from becoming today management of contingencies in a complex society looking, here and now, to the common humanity of the 'generations of Adam'. And at least in this light from turning still to the future under the sign of redemption.
