Si delinea, però, una cruciale alternativa: la chiave per apprezzare il gratuito va cercata nel darsi di contingenze refrattarie a ogni telos, o è vero, invece, che ogni giusta valorizzazione della contingenza implica il riferimento a una gratuità densa di telos, di cui il contingente può essere tramite ma mai misura ultima?

After considering the semantic ambiguities that characterize the notions of ‘gratuity’ and ‘contingency,’ the essay focuses on what they can tell us about the gift and task of our existence. A line of convergence emerges between the ultimate sense of gratuity, tied to the generous and challenging offer of intrinsic values, and the positivity of the contingency where chances of novelty and unpredictibility give space to our freedom.
