Il principale interesse del Concilio sta nella struttura stessa dell'incarnazione del messaggio cristiano nella storia. Spinto dagli eventi storici, il Concilio deve metter a punto tale tema onde individuare il rapporto tra rivelazione e storia e quindi il senso della presenza della Chiesa nella storia. La Chiesa è realtà e testimonianza dell'incarnazione, mediante la liturgia e mediante il lavoro dei laici. Secondo l'autore il tema dell'alterità resta determinante per il Concilio, il quale è costantemente preoccupato più dalla affermazione della identità che dal nesso tra identità e alterità.

The primary concern of the Council is the structure of the incarnation of the Christian message in history. Compelled by historical events, the Council must establish the doctrine of the Church on that theme; its aim is to identify the relationship between revelation and history, and therefore the sense of the presence of the Church in history. The Church is both reality and witness to the incarnation through liturgy and laymen's work. According to the author, the theme of otherness remains essential to the Council's work. But the Council is so absorbed in the affirmation of identity that it does not evaluate enough the nexus between identity and otherness.
