Il saggio ricostruisce l’importanza del sentimento della paura nel moderno, in particolare a partire da Hobbes e Descartes, e ne mostra le successive varianti di significato fino ai giorni nostri, dove l’apparente ridimensionamento della paura produce però nuovi mostri, come attesta il prevalere sociale del risentimento. Non si tratta tanto, questa la proposta conclusiva, di espungere la paura, che resta il risvolto negativo del rapporto con l’estraneo (mentre la meraviglia è quello positivo), quanto di guadagnare un rapporto più saldo con il presente, una positiva relazione con l’esistente che non cerchi di sfuggirne nella elusiva duplice direzione del passato o del futuro.

The essay reconstructs the significance of the feeling of fear in modern times, especially after Hobbes and Descartes, as well as its subsequent variations in meaning up to today, when the apparent decrease of fear produces new monsters, as the social preponderance of resentment shows. The final proposal doesn’t aim at erasing fear, which is the negative side of our attitude towards the unknown (wonder being the positive one);rather, it suggests to establish a solid relation with the present. A relation, which doesn’t try to escape reality through a recourse to the past or the future.
