Questo articolo intende approfondire il senso della misericordia vista come qualità fondamentale e distintiva dell’amore di Dio. Tale idea viene considerata per come viene testimoniato nella tradizione biblica e cristiana in particolare, nonché per come si può sperimentare nelle relazioni di autentica comunione. Sulla base di queste fonti si chiarisce che la misericordia è il cuore dell’identità divina. Dio è amore, questo amore è misericordia. Nella sua realtà questa è la sola giustizia e la sola verità. La misericordia è la forza che porta a compimento tutte le espressioni dell’amore divino. Tale amore non abbandona ma sostiene ogni donna e ogni uomo, non condanna ma guarisce, non si ferma sul confine del male e della morte, ma li sconfigge. Così esso apre la via della realizzazione effettiva della nuova umanità promessa da Dio e incarnata in Gesù. Ecco perché teologia e filosofia devono ripensare l’autentico valore e la natura della misericordia.

This essay intends to deepen the sense of mercy seen as fundamental and distinctive quality of God’s love. Such a concept is regarded on the basis both of biblical texts, in particular the Christian tradition, and of relationships where human beings live the true communion. Through these sources we can understand that mercy is the heart of divine identity. God is love and love is mercy. In his reality this is the only justice and truth. Mercy is the force which fulfills all the expressions of God’s love. Such a love doesn’t leave us but it sustains every woman or man; it doesn’t condemn us but it can heal anyone; it doesn’t stop in front of evil and death, but it defeats them. This love opens for us the way of the actual realization of the new humanity which God promised and Jesus embodies. For these reasons theology and philosophy must reconsider the authentic value and nature of mercy.
