The essay is focused on the semantic range
of the term conscience put to use by Rousseau. From its
connection with reason through its function as inner principle
“of justice and virtue” up to its universality,
insofar a it is referred to the soul’s well-being,
the notion of conscience displays first of all the meaning
of an interior light and assent. Within the frame of such
a notion according to Rousseau finally virtue is linked
up to religion.
