Il saggio svolge, prendendo le mosse da Das Heilige di R. Otto, una fenomenologia del sacro, del religioso e del potere. L’obiettivo è quello di mettere in evidenza le loro reciproche interrelazioni, e allo stesso tempo di portare alla luce il modo in cui il sacro può deformare tanto il religioso quanto il potere; in quanto attribuisce al religioso una struttura simmetrica, nonché, in forza dei suoi simboli attinti al sacro, struttura il potere in apparato ideologico. In tal modo quest’ultimo esercita un influsso potente sulla vita degli individui e dei gruppi umani.

Building on R. Otto’s Das Heilige, the essay develops a phenomenology of the sacred, of the religious, and of power. It aims a thigh lighting their mutual interrelations and, at the same time, at bringing to the fore the way in which the sacred may distort both religion and power. It gives a symmetrical structure to the relation between the religious and the «totally Other» and, by dint of its sacred symbols, provides power with an ideological apparatus. Thus, the latter exerts a powerful influence upon the life of individuals as well as on that of human groups.
