La storia del pensiero occidentale fa sempre riferimento, in una maniera o nell’altra, alla teologia cristiana. René Descartes, noto come il padre della modernità, è l’ultimo filosofo cattolico ad entrare a far parte del canone della storia della filosofia occidentale (da quel momento in avanti dominata da figure di cultura protestante). Tuttavia, Descartes può essere accolto soltanto assumendo che il suo cattolicesimo non sia che una maschera che serva a proteggerlo dall’“oscura e temibile Inquisizione”. Cosa possiamo dedurre da questa continua esclusione e che cosa rappresenta la straordinaria eccezione di Cartesio?

Western philosophy has always shown, in one way or another, a close relation with Christian theology. René Descartes, knownas the father of modernity, is the last Catholic philosopher to have found his way into the canon of the history of western philosophy (dominated ever since by figures of Protestant culture). However, Descartes is welcomed only supposing that his catholicism was but a mask to protect himself from “the dark, fearful Inquisition”. What is it then, within philosophy itself, that lies behind this constant exclusion, and what does it mean Descartes’exceptional acceptance?
